WHAT IS THE DISTINCTION BETWEEN A BEHAVIOURAL CRISIS AND A PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY?

PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY

Many people in this world have mental illnesses. A person with any mental condition undergoes a very challenging time. Their parents and family who are close to them are also affected because of their erratic behavioral patterns.

People with such mental disorders won’t be able to get a hold of themselves. Sometimes people with other medical conditions like neurologic illness may also suffer a psychiatric emergency.

Mental health keeps a person sane and in place. A healthy mental state will be stable, and in such a state, one can control one’s behavior, thoughts, and actions without any help.

However, people with mental illness lack all these qualities and need somebody to take care of them. There are also other medical conditions like metabolic disorders, neurological disorders, etc., where they demonstrate violent behavior or act out of control.

Both the behavioral crisis and psychiatric emergency are the same. Any person’s behavior that is outrageous, violent, self-harming, or harmful towards others calls for emergency help or support. The sudden behavior change is called the behavioral crisis and is immediately treated under psychiatric emergency or behavioral emergency.

MAJOR SYMPTOMS:

People with mental disorders undergo various episodes and anguish. Episodes are nothing but sudden onslaughts of violent behavior, shouting, lashing out, or screaming. They would need immediate help and support. Some of the symptoms are listed below.

  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Self-harming or harming others
  • Anxiety
  • Panic attacks
  • Drug overdose
  • Violence
  • Depression
  • Paranoid behavior
  • Hallucinations

REASONS FOR BEHAVIOURAL CRISES

It is important to acknowledge that these symptoms are exclusive to people with mental illness; other medical conditions involve these symptoms. Any severe head injury, low iodine or sugar levels, people with hypoxia, hypoglycemia, meningitis, and problems related to the nervous system may also indicate such symptoms at times.

Many mental illnesses arise from manageable or smaller conditions like stress, anxiety, depression, panic attacks, etc.

When a person finds themselves in a bad state of mind, they should start healing measures or put in some effort to get out of the demotivating state as soon as possible. Once all this stress, anxiety, anger begins to pile up, it will result in critical issues, which can also be life-threatening.

TREATMENTS TO HELP CURE MENTAL DISORDERS:

Treating a patient with mental ailments and other medical conditions differs drastically. The normal lifestyle of people with mental illnesses is affected immensely because of their unstable actions.

These people have sudden mood shifts, unbearable torments, violent behavior, and so on. Every individual may have varied trigger points according to the traumas they went through and react differently to them. Communication or psychotherapy is the key aspect of healing. Given below are some major psychiatric treatments:

COUNSELLING – The primary step towards diagnosis is counseling. This is when a psychologist talks to the affected person and tries to get a clear picture of what is beneath the changed behavior.

Counseling is given for various issues like addiction, anger management, personal problems, trauma, cognitive behavior, psychiatric, etc. The counselor listens, observes, evaluates the patient, and assists the patient in positive thinking, and helps them bring their thoughts and action under control.

GROUP THERAPY – In group therapy, people who have suffered from similar experiences are put together in a room and are asked to share their traumatizing episodes and behavior as a let-out.

These sessions efficiently move the patients towards healing, self-acceptance and allow them to socialize without any hesitation. As everyone lets out their stories of anguish, harmful thoughts, and anxiety, they tend to feel better gradually.

COGNITIVE BEHAVIOUR THERAPY – This psychotherapy aids in inducing positive thoughts in the minds of people. These help patients process logical and real thoughts, making their lives more livable and effortless.

This treatment encourages reliable and optimistic thinking in patients with anxiety, depression, addiction, phobias, sleeping or eating disorders, etc.

There are also many other types of treatments and services available. The patient is diagnosed and evaluated thoroughly, and they are facilitated with best-suited treatment programs resulting in faster recovery and healing.

LENGTH OF STAY:

The treatments and the duration of the treatments depend entirely on the severity, involvement, and reciprocation of the patients. Patients will be provided with treatments as inpatients and outpatients based on their behavior.

If the patients’ parents find it manageable, they will be asked to visit for a check-up at regular intervals. Suppose the patients are uncontrollable and are undergoing a rough patch with never-ending episodes or other symptoms. In that case, the patient is treated as an inpatient or treated under home care facilities accordingly.

Mental health balance is vital to lead a happy and normal life. People should realize and monitor their state of mind, thought composers, their reasoning abilities carefully. Any slight variations should be immediately addressed and consulted.
